Bag of Rice Project #157 -A visit to the Amos family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Amos family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Katrina Thompson this is the 157th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this special family in a village called Uruk Unam outside Uyo in Akwa Ibom state. They were referred to us by their village chief due to their circumstance. We met Mrs Amos, a widow. She has 5 children and 3 grandchildren whom she is taking care of. They live in a mud hut with no electricity and plumbing and share other utilities with their other neighbors.

Mrs Amos is a farmer and she stays with one of her kids and three of her grand kids. Most of her kids are in the city, working menial jobs with very little to take care of themselves and their family and have mostly left their mother alone. We spoke to Mrs Amos through the village chief and she farms and sells her harvests and when their is poor harvests she struggles to take care of herself and her grand kids. They cook in a kitchen shared by with another neighbor and they use firewood to cook.

The village chief spoke a lot about this family, we didn’t get to take pictures of the inside of their home but one of the rooms has no roof and when it rains they all stay in one of the rooms which has a roof. I was happy that we were able to help this family and the smiles on their faces and their gratitude was very apparent. This food will be very essential to this family and will feed them for months to come.
