Bag Of Rice Project #180 -A visit to the Jumbo family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Jumbo family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Patricia Cluff this is the 180th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this family in a village outside Uyo, Nigeria. I saw children playing outside as we were lost looking for James family (bag of rice #179) residence, so while the others were asking for directions I was making friends with the kids and I had to come back to see where they lived. The Jumbo family live in a mud house with no electricity or plumbing and for water they go to a nearby stream or collect rainwater. The Jumbos have 6 kids and they were fun to meet and we visited their family because they waved and smiled at us as we drove by. We had been driving for hours and their smiles were a welcome sight.

The Jumbos cook in a little shed besides their house, they use firewood which makes everywhere black with soot but it’s also the cheapest they can afford. Mr Jumbo is a farmer and grows cassava (starchy tuberous root of a tropical tree, used as food in tropical countries but requiring careful preparation to remove traces of cyanide from the flesh). Which they sell to feed their kids and put them through school. Things have not been moving well for the family and they have hard problems financially and have had trouble feeding their kids properly.

Mr Jumbo had seen us around the area but he did not know that we were coming to his house. He was even happier to learn that his kids brought us to his house. They were very much in need of something like this and were very grateful to those who donated to their family. This bag of Rice will go a long way in helping this family avoid starvation and the Jumbos were very surprised and happy at this gift. I was especially happy for this family and I was glad my new friends got some Rice.
