Bag of Rice Project #437 -A visit to the Akpan family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Akpan family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Mikee Dastoli this is the 437h bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We paid a visit to the Akpan’s family in a village called Ifa in Akwa ibom state, Nigeria. We were vigilant enough to spot this building from afar and not pass it by. This family live in a very small room in an incomplete building with no favorable water and electricity supply. We were welcomed by Mr Moses Aniefiok Akpan his wife Mrs Ofonime and their three lovely children. They were kind enough to welcome us into their home.

Mr Akpan happen to be a manual laborer and he manually mixes cement and gravel to make cement blocks. He only finds jobs when a new house is being built around their area. He also works during the general labor market clearing grasses and farms. It has really been unsteady for the family to be able to provide essential amenities but they strive to pull through. We also came to discover that they cook just outside their home in the open with firewood and an iron tripod. This is their cooking space as they can’t afford a room for cooking. The few kitchen equipment they have is kept in the room we they lay their heads.

The Akpans were ecstatic when they discovered what we brought for them. The look on Mrs Akpans face as she tried to see the bag of Rice and the smile on her face when she actually saw it was a wonderful sight to see. They were very very grateful to those who donated this miracle to their family as they could not afford a bag of Rice by themselves. This gift will make a lot of difference as it will sustain them for months and in this inflated economy it is an invaluable addition to this family.
