Bag of Rice Project #438 -A visit to the Effiong family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Effiong family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Megan Wells this is the 438th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We came across this family in a little village called Ifa in Akwa ibom State, Nigeria. The poor construction and display of this house pulled our attention. As unbalanced as it looks we were surprised to find out that people reside in such places. It is rather painful and touching. This little space is patched with old PVC pieces, rough zinc and wood which is so despairing. We were welcomed by Mr Victor Edem Effiong and his wife Mrs Victoria. A beautiful family with three lovely children.

Mr Effiong is a persevering man who works really hard for his family. He is a Mason, a brick layer at the local market. Mrs Victoria sells firewood at the local market. Her husband assists her in breaking the wood for her to sell. I see the zeal this family invests their strength to work hard everyday in rider to offer proper education for their kids because non of their kids are admitted to any educational institutions yet. Looking further to the kitchen of this family, we discovered that they have made different adjustments and demarcations in the room to accommodate the cooking equipment.

It was a pleasure meeting this family as Mrs Effiong saw me in their neighbors compound and she repeatedly pleaded for us to come and visit them too. They received us very warmly and of course were grateful to receive the bag of Rice which is unaffordable to them at the price it currently is at the market. A bag of Rice is comfortably above the minimum wage in Nigeria and most families such as this one, live well below the minimum wage. They expressed their sincere thanks to those who donated to their family and prayed that God will reward them for their good deeds.
