Bag of Rice Project #45 -A visit to the Justina family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Justina family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Melissa Coy and Ashley Ecker Family this is the 45th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This wonderful is another example of a strong woman doing all she can to single handedly take care of her family. Mrs Justina is a widow whose husband died in a motor accident and left her with 5 kids to take care of. They live in a one bedroom apartment with a lot of other tenants. As it was holiday season most of her kids were away to visit her grandparents and we only met one at home.

In the picture above, the kids are playing a Nigerian version of hopscotch and having fun doing it in such a little space. Mrs Justina is a trader and she sells fresh fruits in the market. The son that we met at home whose name is Gideon is a learning to be a tailor, in a bid to help his mom out. The area where they live is one of the roughest and busiest part of Aba and there is almost some sort of activity everywhere you look. The other of Mrs Justina’s kids all have skills or are learning a skill to help out the family.

When we explained to Mrs Justina the reason for our visiting her and gave her the bag of Rice, she was delighted and was pleasantly surprised that anyone will remember and visit her. She could not stop thanking us and when we told her that people donated to give her the Rice she was very grateful and asked us to extend her thanks to them. It was such a great moment for me seeing a strong woman like Mrs Justina with all she had been through to help her family and the impact the food will make and strengthening her to do more.
