Bag of Rice Project #456 -A visit to the Ekong family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Ekong family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS this is the 456th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in Uyo, Nigeria. They were recommended to us by their neighbor, who noticed their dire situation and reached out to us. They live in a one room apartment that is constructed with zinc, and it recently got flooded, and the family lost most of their belongings. Mrs Ekong is a widow and she has four kids, and they all stay in that small zinc container like house. When we met them, they were very excited to meet us.

The Ekong family has been through a lot, from losing their father and husband Mr Ekong, to getting chased from their home by the family of Mr Ekong which led them to being homeless until Mrs Ekong could afford to construct this zinc structure for her and her kids. Mrs Ekong told us that she lost all their belongings and had to start from scratch. They created a space outside their home to cook and serve as their kitchen. They use firewood to cook because it is the cheapest option that they can afford, and they were cooking when we arrived. When we visited, the husband was not around, we were told he is unemployed at the moment, the wife, Mrs. Favour Leo Ekong sells small provisions on a table just in front of their home to cater for the family.

When we told them what we brought for them, they thought we were joking considering how the price of a bag of rice has skyrocketed, When we brought it out, they asked us which political party we were affiliated with, but we told them it was not political, that it was given to them by a donor. Given everything they had been through, the flooding of their home affected them immensely. They lost a lot due to flooding, even though they never had much in the first place. They were extremely grateful for this gift, and they prayed that God would bless the donor and continue to reward them for their great deeds. They continued praying and thanking us until we left.
