Bag of Rice Project #457 -A visit to the Etim family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Etim family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS this is the 457th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this wonderful family in Uyo, Nigeria. We visited their house which is located in Nkemba street. This is one of the streets in Uyo that has a bad drainage system and whenever there is a heavy downpour the people are left homeless and they look for where to stay in this period. The Etim family lives in a one room apartment and they have 10 kids, only 2 are still living with them. Most of their children have been sent to live with other families as servants. In return the children should get a meal and the chance to attend school. However often these deals are not kept and the children are not well taken care of. This is a heart breaking situation for parents, but they have no other options when they can not feed their children.

The Etims do not have a space for a kitchen in their house, they constructed a small shed outside their home and they cook with firewood because that is the cheapest way to cook and they can’t afford a gas cooker. Mrs. Love Daniel Etim sells smoked fish, she feeds the family with this. The husband is unemployed and he engages in daily labor work to support the family.

The Etims were surprised when we told them what we brought for them. They did not believe their eyes seeing a bag of rice, the price of a bag of Rice is so unaffordable to the common Nigerian and families greatly appreciate this gift. They felt we were sent by politicians because of the coming election in February. They were shocked someone can donate a bag of rice for them, they appreciated it and prayed that God will bless the donor. When we left, they smiled all through.
