Bag of Rice Project #469 -A visit to the Monday family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Monday family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 469th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Monday family stays in Eket a village in Akwa Ibom state. We met the family sittting in front of their house, they gave us a warm welcome. The family stays in a one-room apartment, the building is not completed and doesn’t have the necessary amenities a house should have. The family has 6 kids and when we told them what we had for them they told us it is a prank, but when they saw it they were shocked. A bag of rice is worth more than most people make in a months time.

The Monday family constructed where they cook with molded clay and make use of firewood, which is the cheapest form of cooking they can afford. Given the high cost of gas, the family is unable to obtain cooking gas. They told us Mr. Samson is a security man at a primary school in the community, he does that to fend for the family. His wife, Mrs. Justina, told us she is a trader and sells in front of the house; she does this to try and take care of the family.

The family was in dancing and singing mode, and they started praying for the donor and said GOD should bless the work of their hand. They did not believe their eyes because a bag of rice cost more than the minimum wage in Nigeria and they even earn below the minimum wage. They thanked the donor for helping them through these hard times.
