Bag of Rice Project #468 -A visit to the Samson family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Samson family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Becky Wright, and this is the 468th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Samson family in Eket, a village in Akwa Ibom state. We met the family sitting in front of their house. The Samson family stays in a mud house, which can collapse anytime. They are unable to afford a house built with blocks. The Samsons have only 1 kid, when we told them what brought us to the family they jumped up and hugged us and said they went to church this morning hungry with nothing in the house to eat. They asked us which political party we affiliated with and we told them someone donated it to them they need do nothing in return for this gift, but they did not believe their eyes.

The Samson family constructed their kitchen with sticks and used palm fruit dry leaves as their zinc it is called (nkayan). The kitchen has no door, it is an open space, they are unable to buy cooking gas so the family opted for the cheapest means of cooking which is the use of firewood, the firewood they use in cooking is not bought they told us they go into the bush to get them. Mr. Samson was not in at the time of our visit, we were told he drives a bike to fend for the family but the bike has developed a fault and needs to be repaired. The wife Mrs Samson mary said she is a trader and she supports her husband with that. They were excited to see us.

Their kitchen

The family sang a song in their traditional dialect praising GOD for the timely miracle and also prayed for the donor, for giving them a bag of rice at these hard times, they then commanded the blessing of GOD to follow them and replenish their pocket. The family was full of joy until we left.
