Bag of Rice Project #470 -A visit to the Assang family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Assang family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 470th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this lovely family in Eket, a village in Akwa Ibom State.  The family was recommended to us by a friend. The family stays in a one room apartment that is built with mud. This kind of house structure is no longer durable because it can collapse at any time. They stay in the apartment with their four kids. When they saw us, they welcomed us, and when we told them what we had for them, they thought we were joking or playing pranks until they saw it happen and they were surprised.

The Assang family created a space at the back of their house which served as their kitchen, this kitchen lacked the basic things that should be in a kitchen. They don’t have cooking gas but resort to the use of firewood to cook because they can’t afford cooking gas considering the price of buying it and filling it. When we visited the husband was not in, but the wife Mrs. Uduak told us that they are farmers, and they use that to cater for the family.

The Assang family were overjoyed when we gave them the bag of rice. They felt we were affiliated to any political party and wanted to know the politician that sent us. When we told them someone donated it to them, nothing was required of them in return. We just wanted to bless them, they prayed for the donor and said God will bless them and replenish their pocket. The family were happy and they waved and prayed out loud for us as we left.
