Bag of Rice Project #484 -A visit to the Bassey family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Bassey family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Watkins Family, and this is the 484th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this beautiful family seated outside their compound, the Bassey family resides in Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. When we drove in they welcomed us and when we told them what we have for them, they didn’t believe it, they thought it was a prank, when we brought out what we have for them they shouted and started asking questions. We told them someone donated it to them. The Bassey family has 5 kids, and they live in a one-room apartment, which is built with mud, and the roof is a thatched roof which is made with palm fronds. This kind of room leaks when rain falls.

The Bassey family cooks at the back of their house. They cook in an open space. The family makes use of firewood because that is the cheapest fuel they can afford, but when it’s during the rainy season, they shift it close to the house to prevent rain from entering their food. Mr. Bassey and his wife are both unemployed; they engage in menial jobs to try and feed their family.

The family was happy because they had gotten what they would eat. They prayed for the donor and said God will bless them. They did not expect to get a bag of rice and didn’t expect that anyone that’s not their relative could give them a bag of rice without any strings attached. They were so happy and screamed for joy.
