Bag of Rice Project #485 -A visit to the Emmanuel family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Emmanuel family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Watkins Family, and this is the 485th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Emmanuel Family in Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria. This beautiful family was seated in front of their house, they welcomed us when they saw us and when we told them what we have for them they told us ” it’s a lie”. They never believe someone could donate a bag of rice to them since it was the election period, they felt we were sponsored by politicians and they also doubted it because politicians don’t give a full bag of rice. The family is blessed with 5 kids. They live in a one-bedroom apartment, and they complained that the house can collapse at any time and that they are living by the ” Grace of God”

The Emmanuel Family built a kitchen at the back of their house and the roof is a thatched roof made from palm fronds if heavy rain falls we were told the roof leaks so they move their kitchen close to their house during the rainy season. The family cooks with firewood because they don’t pay to get it, they go into the forest and cut down trees and make it firewood, as they are unable to afford gas. Mrs Imaobong Emmanuel sells fish and palm wine to fend for the family and her husband is unemployed.

The family was happy to meet us and they were very surprised by the gift we brought for them. They thanked the donors and prayed that God will continue blessing the donor and replenish their pockets. They were happy until we left.
