Bag of Rice Project #496 -A visit to the Ekanem family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Ekanem family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 496th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Ekanem family was recommended to us by a friend. We met the family in Eket, Akwa Ibom State. The family resides in Effoi, a village in Eket. When we got to the compound the family was inside, so we knocked and they came out and welcomed us. When we told them our purpose for visiting they didn’t believe someone would give them a bag of rice without any strings attached. The family has six kids and only one is in school, the other five are at home because there is no money to send them to school and even the one in school is on the verge of dropping out because of money. The family lives in a mud house, and on the 20th of February 2023, rain fell and destroyed part of the house, which was a room they sleep in, they said no one was inside when it happened and no one was hurt, so they sleep in an open space because they haven’t been able to repair it because of lack of money.

Front view of their home

The Ekanem family cooks at the back of their house, and they cook in an open space. The family was unable to afford cooking gas, so they made use of firewood. Making use of firewood is harmful to health because of the smoke that emits from the wood. Mr. Ekanem was a former bike repairer and now he is unemployed. The wife Mrs. Christiana the wife of Mr. Ekanem is a farmer and she does this to feed the family.

Their kitchen

The family was happy. They prayed for the donor saying the blessings of God will follow them all time. The family thanked us as we drove away.
