Bag of Rice Project #536 -A visit to the Anthony family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Anthony family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to James and Nancy Aydelotte Family, and this is the 536th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We got the news from one of our friends that the Anthony family is in dire need. The reason behind this is that Mr. Anthony lost his job two months ago, and they have been finding it hard to feed. We met the Anthony family in Itu village, which is domiciled in the southern part of Nigeria. When we got to the compound, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony were both outside, and when they saw us, they welcomed us and offered us a seat. We didn’t have time to sit. We conveyed our message to them: that someone had donated a bag of rice to them. They told us it was a prank and that we were doing YouTube videos with them. We told them it was real, and they were shocked. We brought out the bag of rice, and they screamed. The children ran out, and they were all happy. The family lives in one room that is built with blocks and not fully plastered. Mr. and Mrs. Anthony have five kids. Due to the condition of the family, the children have started dropping out of school; only one of them is in school at the moment due to lack of funds.

The family cooks at the back of their house, and they make use of firewood for cooking because they are unable to fill their cooking gas since their dad lost his job. They resorted to firewood, which is the cheapest they can afford. Though this method has been considered harmful to health, they are left with no choice but to make use of it. Mr. Anthony said since he lost his job, he has resorted to doing laborer work, which cannot fend for the family. Mrs. Anthony owns a small store, which she sells in front of their house. With just a few items to pick from. They have been using this means of survival to take care of the children.

The fact that a stranger could give them a bag of rice without even knowing their name made the family happy. They prayed for God to keep watching over, guiding, and providing for them when they needed it most, and they commanded the sky to honor the one who gave. The family seemed happy and excited as we drove away.
