Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Abasi family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Marlow Family, and this is the 571st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met the Abasi family in Uyo village. When we got to the compound, no one was outside; we had to knock on their door, and they came out. They gave us a receptive welcome and offered us water to drink, which we politely declined. They asked us our purpose for visiting them, which we told them. They did not believe their ears; they were surprised someone they did not know could donate a bag of rice to them considering how bad the economy is; they even said politicians do not even give a bag of rice; the family prayed for the donor. The Abasi family lives in a house constructed with zinc and wood. They are unable to afford a house and they have to manage the one they constructed. The house lacks basic amenities; they have to take their bath outside because they do not have a bathroom. The Abasi family is blessed with 4 beautiful kids. We noticed that one of the child’s hands was cut off, and we enquired about what happened. They told us the father did that and ran away.
The Abasi family cooks with firewood outside their house; they are unable to afford cooking gas because of how expensive it is, so they have no other option but to use firewood. Cooking with firewood is harmful and hurts the human body. Mrs. Abasi is a vegetable seller. She sells in the local market. She does this to take care of the family.
The family was thrilled when we handed them the bag of rice, and they prayed that God would bless the donor efforts and grow them in every way. As we departed, the family waved and grinned at us while they continued to pray.
