Shadow Drawing – Fun Art for Kids

Looking for an easy low cost art project for the kids? Try Shadow Drawing. All you need is a pencil, paper, a few toys, and a sunny day!

I love that I didn’t have to go to the store for any extras for this art activity. My 6 year old had fun helping me find toys that would work for this project. The older 2 kids who are 10 and 13 even wanted to try this project out!

You can do this outside in the morning or afternoon. We did it by a big, east facing window at 9 in the morning. And the sun was shining!

Grab a few toys with interesting shapes. The pineapple was an easy one to trace and the dinosaur was a really good one too.

Set the toy on the edge of the paper and adjust it so the whole shadow rests on the paper and then trace. It’s that easy.

It was fun to see how stretched out some of the toy shadows were. The kids then decided to color some.
