My kids are still little so they are SO excited about Santa, and they are trying really hard to be good cause they know his elves are watching them.  So I decided to have a little fun with them and let them get a special secret message.

For this project you will need white paper, a white color crayon and water colors….. and children who believe in the magic of Christmas :)

While my kids were are at school I took normal paper, and used a white color crayon to draw a Christmas message for each of them.

I then put the paper back in the pile as if it had never been touched.  When the kids got home from school they wanted to paint…. so they started to paint as normal…..TILL they started to notice something was hidden on their paper.

As they painted they unveiled hidden images.  They were so confused as to how they got there.

My kids decided it MUST have been Santa’s sneaky little elves playing a trick on them.

It was so much fun to hear them giggle and laugh as they painted.

Try this “thrifty” fun project with your kids!

“We WHISK you a Merry KISS-MAS”

Are you looking for a fun idea to give your neighbors or teachers for Christmas… but budget friendly?

Well a few weeks ago at Albertsons I was able to get these Betty Crocker Cookie mixes FREE  with coupons, and the bag of Kisses for $.50 a bag.  So all I had to buy was the whisks from the dollar store, and the red cello bags were also from the dollar store and came in a  package of 30 (look in the party supply section).  The ribbon and craft supplies I already on hand.

First fill the whisk with Hershey’s Kisses.  Do this by pulling the wire open and little filling it up with Hershey’s Kisses.  Then place it in a cello bag, and close at the top with a twist tie.

At the very top of the Betty Crocker cookie mix package is a 1 inch strip that is sealed shut.  Punch 2 holes  in the top about 1/4 inch apart. (Make sure you do it in the top  as to not break the seal of the bag)

Cut your ribbon (I used a 15 inch piece) and thread it into the holes you just punched.

At this point I then tied the whisk filled with kisses to the bag of cookies, then added our mini card  and a tag I made that says

We “Whisk” you a Merry “Kiss-mas”

Then tie a bow…. and you are done…

I printed these tags off the computer using Open Office on my computer, then punched out a scalloped tag in green with a craft punch.  The red “Kiss-mas” tag was printed at the end and put on top… only after I realized I miss spelled “Kiss-mass”…..Oops :)

The whole project took about an hour and a half to make 12 bags and each bag cost me about $1.25 …. ahh the power of coupons :)

My kids are excited to give these as a  fun little gift.

Soldier’s Silent Night

Many of you will spend this Christmas with an empty seat at the dinner table….. your loved one in a far off land fighting for the safety of others  and making sure we as Americans will continue to enjoy our freedom.  Please know that we personally pray for your families and all the service men and women daily, we are so grateful for your sacrifice.  I ran across this video on youtube and wanted to share it will you all.  If you can not view the view below click here.

Yes how sad is that I do not even know what the official name for these are… we just call them Granny’s Pecan Rolo Pretzel Christmas Treats.  Because Granny makes them every Christmas and we look  forward to this delightful treat!  I have to admit that most Holiday goodies I can easily eat one and walk away with no temptation to over eat…… BUT these, well they are my weakness, and no joke I am pretty sure I could eat the WHOLE PAN.

The kids love to help make these, and it goes a lot faster with all their little fingers unwrapping the rolos.

To make these you need

  • about 50 small pretzels
  •  50 unwrapped rolos (one bag)
  • 50 pecan halves
  • large pan
  • preheated oven at 300 degrees

Place pretzel down first, then the rolo, place pecan on top.  Place in a 300 degree oven for 1-2 minutes  NO LONGER as soon as the rolos start to look shinny take them out.  You do not want to melt them, just warm them up.  Once you take them out of the oven push the pecan down to “smoosh it all together”.  Let them cool and enjoy (or you can try one while they are still warm… but watch out you may end up eating the whole pan).

Reindeer FoodIngard here, when my children were young and we were living back east, a dear neighbor (thank you Lisa) shared this cute gift with us.

Here is what I remember she did:

  • 1/4 cup oats (old fashioned or quick)
  • 1 Tablespoon sprinkles
  • 1 Tablespoon raisins (I used cranberries)
  • 1teaspoon red or green colored sugar sprinkles
  • You can even put in the colored paper dots from a hole punch (I didn’t)
  • Mix these ingredients together and place in resealable baggie

Print up this poem on your computer or by hand and affix to the baggie:

Reindeer Food

Sprinkle on the lawn at night,

The moonlight will make it shine so bright.

As the reindeer fly and roam,

this will guide their way to your home.
