Bag of Rice Project #467 -A visit to the Edoho family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Edoho family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Tenney, Ann, and Chad Hendrickson and this is the 467th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Edoho family in Eket, a small, rural village in Akwa Ibom State. The family was recommended to us by a friend. The family lives in a mud house, which was a style of building in ancient times in Akwa Ibom State. They have four kids, and the mud house they reside in is a one-room apartment. On seeing us enter the compound, they were afraid, but when we told them what we had for them, the first question they asked us was, “Which political party do we belong to?” We explained ourselves to them, this was a gift for them, nothing required in return and they were shocked. Giving them a full bag of rice was a dream to them, and they were still skeptical about such a gift.

The Edoho family does not have a kitchen, they cook in an open space, and they are unable to afford cooking gas. The family makes use of firewood, which is the cheapest means of cooking they can afford. Getting gas now will cost the family a lot considering the little amount of money they are earning. Mr. Edoho is a security man. He does this to take care of the family and their four kids. The wife, Mrs. Mary Edoho, is unemployed, she said she often engages in menial jobs to help support the family. The family was happy to see us.

The rice project has touched a lot of lives. The Edoho family was happy, and all they could do at the moment was thank the donor. They openly prayed to God, that he should bless them and the work of their hands. The family was full of praise until we left. They were happy and said God had visited them today.
