Bag of Rice Project #473 -A visit to the Daniel family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Daniel family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Kelsey Whelan, and this is the 473rd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Daniel family in Eket, a village that is located in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. When we got to the family, they were sitting in front of their house. The family resides in a one-room apartment, and their house is built with mud. They share this apartment with other neighbors. Mr.Daniel has 2 kids. They welcomed us and as we told them what we have for them, they were surprised, they said the amount used in getting a bag of rice is more than the minimum wage in the country.

The Daniel family erected a structure at the back of their house which was their kitchen, it is in an open place and it has no door or roof. They cook with firewood because that’s the cheapest they can afford. They are unable to afford a gas cooker considering the amount it costs now. Mr. Daniel is unemployed and has picked an interest in driving a motorcycle but he is unable to afford it at the moment, the wife Mrs. Itoro is a farmer and she does this to help the family to feed.

The family was in a jubilation mood as they got the rice and all they could do was thank the donor for remembering them during these hard times, they prayed for them and said God should bless the work of their hand and whatever they lay their hands on will work for them, the husband was happy because he said he has what to use to sustain the family. They waved at us as we left and continued praying.
