School Lunch Idea ~ How to Keep a Sliced Apple From Turning Brown

I send apples with my kids in their lunches sometimes. But the truth is, when I send them they rarely get eaten. There is always some excuse as to why they didn’t eat it, but I don’t know, maybe the cookies in the lunchbox next to them are too appealing, or they don’t want to get it stuck in their teeth when they take a bite.

It all boils down to us, as parents, trying to help our kids make healthy choices most of the time and when the healthy choice comes home in the lunchbox untouched it is time for a new plan!

So I got creative.  I had tried slicing them for them, but they are yucky and brown by lunch, so they didn’t get touched that way either.  I got to thinking, if I could keep the air off of them while still having them sliced and easier to eat that would be great!  This works!

You will need

An apple

Apple slicer/corer

Clean rubberband

These apple slicers sure do make life easier, don’t they?  We use ours all the time!  (If you don’t have one, you can get them at virtually any store in the kitchen section)

Next

Slice your apple, but before you remove the slices, carefully slide the slicer back off trying to leave it still in shape.  If it doesn’t work, just get it off as close as you can.  Now that you have the apple off the slicer, use your hands to shape it back into shape so it still looks like a whole apple.  While holding it with one hand, wrap the rubber band around with the other hand.

Now you can put it in a baggie, or just in the lunchbox like it is.  Sometimes some of the skin rips off when I do it, so you may have some small brown areas by the time it is ready to be eaten, but it sure beats a whole apple wasted because it wasn’t pretty enough!

Extras

Now at least some of the sections are being eaten.  I love to include some peanut butter or even a little caramel that they can dip the apple in.  Makes a yummy treat, but they are still eating something that is great for them too!  Try it, maybe it will lessen your lunchbox battles too!

Period survival kit

Have a teen or tween that is going through puberty? A Period survival kit can be a fun gift for them to welcome them to the club.

Period survival kitIf you have a tween or teen that has embarked on the puberty phase of their life it can be an awkward and uncomfortable time for them as they get used to it. A period survival kit can be a fun gift to help them see that it can be a fun time of life too. Throw in some of their favorite things along with some things they will need. Put it all into a cute bag and they can just keep it in their back pack or locker just in case.

Some of the things you could add to the bag that they may need are

some different sizes of pads

pantyliners

maybe some small sized tampons

a pair of panties in their size

 moist towelettes

hand sanitizer

Some of the more fun things that could help brighten their day could be some of their favorite treats

chocolate (you must have chocolate in a period kit)

a salty snack

a healthy snack

lipgloss

nail polishes

face masks

or so many other fun things that they may love.

Having a few of these on hand for nieces, cousins, friends, any tween or teen girl that you may know will brighten anyone’s day. My daughter always carries a few extra in her backpack just in case and it has come in handy.

Boredom Buster, make your own books!

This was such a fun project for my kids! They got creative and had a chance to use their brains while thinking it was all fun, I’m sneaky like that. 😉

I found these awesome books at Target in the One Spot, but just in case they don’t have them at your Target, here are some that are similar, but in fun colors, which I really like.

Another great thing about these is that there aren’t a lot of products needed. Just the books, markers, crayons, or colored pencils and your imagination!

Here are some other thrifty summer fun ideas!

Drawing on the Trampoline with Sidewalk Chalk, Thrifty Summer Fun

Kids get so bored during the summer!  It is sometimes hard to come up with things that entertain them without spending a lot of money.  Well, this idea is so simple, yet is sure to entertain for a little while!  Make it even more fun by letting them have a squirt bottle, or squirt gun to spray their art off when they are done!

All you need is some sidewalk chalk, and a trampoline.  We don’t usually think about drawing on things other than sidewalks with our sidewalk chalk, but we have done this many times and it washes of without any damage to your trampoline.  We have used squirt bottles to “erase” our drawings when we are done, or turn on the sprinklers and let them get wet while their art work disappears.  Either way, your kids will have fun and you won’t hear “I am bored” , for a few minutes anyway!
