End of summer is almost here, the nights are getting cooler. The fruit in our local orchards is ready for harvest and we are eating peaches by the dozen each day. Yes I said by the dozen… with a family of 7 we eat a lot of peaches. So we decided to try out the fastest way to peel a peach in 10 seconds! The kids love to eat them sliced with just a sprinkle of sugar and covered in milk. I like to eat mine with vanilla yogurt and granola. I am the “official peach peeler”, if I am just peeling one peach I do it with a knife. BUT if I have 7-10 peaches to peel all at once I have an awesome trick that allows me to peel them in less than 10 seconds!!!
What to use
Did you know that if you blanch your peaches the skins will literally SLIDE right off. All you need to do is bring a pot of what to boil. In this post I used my new favorite pot check it out here , it is cast iron so it heats up fast and stays hot for a good even cooking. Plus it is red and pretty… :).
Instructions
Bring your water to a boil, gently drop the peaches in. If they are still a bit green (not quite ripe) you will need to boil them a bit longer. But a peach that is ripe and ready to eat only needs to be in the boiling water about 45 seconds to a minute. Quickly take the peach out of the pot and put it in ice water. It will cool very quicly since it has not been in the hot water long enough to cook, it just loosens the skin.
Make a slit in the skip with you knife, use your thumbs to push the skins back. When done correctly the skins will slide right off the peach, in one piece. Takes less than 10 seconds to peel the whole peach. You can now slice the peach up and eat it, bake with it, or even do some home canning.
