Generation of Entitlement?

handout02Since Sarah is in bed resting, and I have the entire blog to myself… wuhhhaaaaa! I am going to post topics that might stir things up. This is my opinion and only mine.

I am beginning to believe our country has a major issue with entitlement. I think we have grown a generation, or maybe it is just a society defect, that feels they should be given what they want.

Being that this is my opinion, I would hope you would honor me “a decent respect” *.

Many seniors who lived through the 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s will most likely say the same. They grew up during hard times. They cherished the little they did have. To this day they will probably turn down a hand out. Have you ever seen Cinderella Man. The movie was based on a true story. James Braddock, who during the 30’s, was a boxer who inspired the working class. In the movie he not only fights in the ring, but he fights to get jobs and earn money. At one point he turned down his own slice of bologna to feed his children. That’s all they had to eat one night. He had a broken hand, but continued to work in the ship yard moving heavy creates and packages off of ships.

In todays society, some feel that just because we are sick, that others should do everything for us. Just because we have little food, that others should give it to us.

I believe that “All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”*

This doesn’t mean that they are given everything. This simply means that Life, and Liberty should be given. And that Happiness is not given, only the right to pursue it. This usually means to work for it.

Granted I wish I didn’t have to work. Ask any one that I work with, they will tell you I would rather be at home. But I have worked since I was 14. I started off in an Eckerd Drugstore in Charlotte NC, which is now called Rite Aid. Then on to being a camera man at a local TV station in Idaho Falls. Then I did landscaping in Jackson Hole WY. Then I worked in a customer service job taking phone orders for Melaleuca. Then on to vacuum sales for a brand called Filter Queen. I was 12th in the nation in total sales! Then I worked for a local Ford dealership, first as a car salesman, then as a a service writer. As I saw the car market decline, I wanted to get back into the medical field. In college my major (for a long time) was pre-med. I wanted to be a pediatrician. But I realized I really hated school. And as a doctor you are away from home a lot. So I went into nursing. Now I work 3 days a week. Granted they are 12 hour shifts, but I am home a ton.

Now the want to help others is a completely different thought process then the process that is happening right now. Granted I would like for all who want it to have it. But there really needs to be a process designed to earn it.

Health care— ooohhh the nasty topic right now. A healthy person cost less on insurances. Where as an unhealthy person cost more, maybe not now but I see it in the hospital everyday.

Welfare – Helping others is a noble act. But receiving with out working for it breeds laziness. Every now and then we receive things with out knowing who or where it comes from. Taking this with humility is noble or for the religiousĀ  like us, it is Christ-like. Some churches give food to those in need, but require (if person is healthy enough) to work for it. Either by going to canneries to help pack the very food they receive. Or by other small andĀ  meaningful jobs.

Did you ever realise that it wasn’t till the Mississippi River flooded in 1927 that the government got involved in state matters. Herbert Hoover, who later became president of the US, enlisted the federal government to help victims of massive flooding.

Until that time, disasters and other humanitarian efforts where the responsibility of the states. In my opinion, that is how the founding fathers set it up as. And it wasn’t until 1927 that our country started to veer away from that outline.

I believe we should all put forth a extraordinary effort to help those around you. I believe that current healthcare needs reform. I believe that current national welfare needs reform. That immigration needs reform. But I feel that we need to re-read the Declaration of Independence. I feel we have become so caring that we are now enablers. We are enabling those that might lean toward being a victim to continue to rely on others instead of feeling the sense of accomplishment in achieving their own “pursuit of Happiness”*
