Liz-

My mom always taught me how to do a weekly menu. After making the Menu she taught me how to create a shopping list from what meals we would be eating. This sure has helped ever since I left home and went to college and then it helped me a lot after getting married.

Something else my mom taught me was when your brown sugar gets hard and lumpy add a piece of bread to it wait overnight. It will be soft and usable again. We also lived in an area that did not have many stores nor get coupons so mom taught us to know the prices on products, shop with a list and be willing to go to multiple stores. The list helped because when its a half an hour drive to the nearest grocery store you aren’t going to forget something you need and pay 3x’s the price at the closest convience store which was still 5 miles away.

We are a charcoal grilling family. When you fire up the grill, don’t cook for only one meal…cook for several! Grilled hamburgers, brats, chicken, and pork taste just as good the next day.

Hi there, as an avid couponer and little space for stock, my momma tip is simple, time saving and space saving: when stocking up on meats use your marinades or dressings when re packageing. then label them what they are – this way you are sure to use stocked items and also have an easier faster dinner plus freezing meat in marinade really takes on the flavor!!!!

Growing up, we were never allowed to dry our laundry in the dryer. We would hang it out on the clothesline or on the little wooden clothes horse during the winter. Once the clothes were dry, we’d put them in the dryer with a wet wash cloth for five minutes on fluff. I always hated having to take the extra time to hang out all the clothes, but now I’m really grateful that I was taught to conserve energy whenever I can.

With my Mom’s favorite motto “Money does NOT grow on trees” she taught my sister and I how to get the most out of your money several different ways. For as long as I can remember during summer months we would find all kinds of gently used things at yard sales, find deals in the paper, or shop at what we now lovingly refer to as “junk stores” (which isn’t all “junk” at all). She has always refinished furniture, recovered furniture and repurposed furniture for other things. My Mom was always thrifty, but now that I am getting all of this stuff for free with coupons she is impressed with me! :-) Thanks to sites like A Thifty Mom I am able to save, stock up, and feed my family by being frugal too.

My mother taught me well how to make something out of nothing and this still serves me well when nothing in my stockpile seems to go together and I invent new dishes to use what we have. This seems to always amaze my husband, whose comment, “This was in our cupboards?”, makes me smile and say, “yes.” Thanks for teaching me to be creative in a thrifty way mom.

My mom taught me to be green and save money before it was popular! She always re-used foil and zip bags and I can’t tell you the last time she used a paper towel! Mom always kept a stack of “bar” towels handy and used them on a regular basis. Her theory was always a towel is better and I can wash it…cheap, cheap, cheap!

The thing my mom taught me the most was not spoken but shown to us through the way she acted. She always took us to church, whether dad went or not, she always went to our parent teacher conferences, she supported us in dance, sports, piano, and all the other pursuits we did. She is really amazing.

My mother is no longer with us but she definately is in my heart. She taught me many things and the most important was “to love”. As I grow older and experience the things that she did as a parent it all becomes even more clear. The only thing that matters when it is time to say goodbye is “I Love You.”

…so many things. Main ones from my mother were – saying “Yes Maam” and “No Sir” and “Thank you!”, being considerate of others, helping the elderly and handicapped, always doing what is right even when your friends aren’t…I could go on and on.

From a practical standpoint, I re-use gallon and half-gallon ziplock bags by washing and drying them. I have made clothes detergent – and hanging out laundry.

Thanks!

My grandmother taught me how to live on a budget, how to have fun, and be who you are. She had to quit school in the 6th grade to help at home but ran two businesses with my grandfather. She had fire red hair and I loved her dearly and miss her so much.

I love the fact that my Mom made our clothes also when I was little and gardened and canned. She lost her Mom at the age of 5 from TB but was lucky enough to be raised by family who taught her to do all this and still are very close. And lucky for me she was my Mom.

My mom always taught me to be resourceful. Don’t just throw things away. If you can use them in another way, make sure to do that. Don’t waste. The mayo jar is empty, can you use it in another way? yes. Store spare bobbins or buttons in them. A shirt is ripped beyond repair, Use the fabric for a quilt and make sure to take those buttons off and save them for something that you might need them for.
Katy
My Mom was always cooking! By example I saw how cooking from scratch was cheaper than eating out. She makes really good food! And even now I often ask her for recipes!
